Day 2(ish) which turned into Day 3


We made it out of DC!! Everyone had a boarding pass, we loaded up on the plane to Ethiopia with our 1,000 pounds of baggage, and took off—PSYCH! We spent 2 hours on the tarmac because of “baggage issues”. Which we later found out was due to someone being escorted off the plane (they had to find and remove his baggage as well). During that time we made bracelets, talked, ate some snacks, and basically did everything we planned to do while flying. So once we actually took off, we were out of ideas. The food? Good. The movie selection? Immaculate. And the flight? 8 hours longer than expected. After a few melatonins and a semi comfortable sleep, we expected to be close to landing in Addis. However, it would be boring if things went smoothly. So, we took a detour to Djibouti where we waited another 4 hours on the tarmac. We all ran out of water around hour 2 of our wait, which was unfortunate. And everyone took a second nap as we departed Djibouti and headed for Addis. Finally we landed and eventually departed the airplane. In total we were on the plane for 21 hours…how fun. After a short bus ride we waited in baggage claim for about 2 hours. Customs went quickly, and soon we met up with Lea!! We bussed to the hotel, got our room assignments, unpacked a little, and headed out again to meet at the Life Training Center. Lea had dinner waiting for us and we had an amazing time eating in the dark (the power went out) and catching up with Lea, Belay and Sammy. We unpacked some of the luggage we brought for HFTF after dinner, then headed out for the night. Back at the hotel we said bye to Lea, and went to bed. We all got a great nights rest, and we are ready for Lalibela!! Please continue to pray for health, rest, and protection for our team!

Day 11–VBS Concludes

Hello friends and family! Thanks for checking in! Today was a wonderful day full of laughter, singing, dancing, crafting and so much more. We woke up this morning, earlier than we would have liked, rolled out of bed and headed to the dining hall for breakfast. We enjoyed our meal, the staff headed off to training, and the team and kids started our third and final day of VBS.   To begin the morning session, we sang some of our favourite songs and played some awesome “repeat after me” games lead by the dynamic duo Sean and Ty.  Ms. Parker taught a lesson asking the question “Who is my neighbour?” The kids participated in discussions and we wrote out all of our thoughts. After the lesson, the kids had the opportunity to make bracelets! One for themselves, and one for a neighbor. They also were able to make a necklace. The kids had a wonderful time making their creations. Even though the beads were a tad bit tiny, the kids giggled and talked as they worked thoughtfully on their bracelets.

Day 5!!

Today was a wonderful and refreshing day. We started off the morning with a delicious breakfast on an overlook with a fantastic view of the mountains and village around us. We saw the local women and children walking up to the city from their small villages and farms and Jamie happened to spot a little monkey too! We ate our delicious omelets, porridge, with plenty of coffee and spiced tea. Afterwards we drove back over to the 900+ year old churches here in Lalibela.   There we were guided through steep staircases, dark rooms and small tunnels (which was a little tough for the claustrophobic peeps like me). We learned the significance of each design in the architecture and how it related to Christianity as a whole. As we continued throughout the churches, we had the opportunity to see the several intricate paintings and tapestries within the churches.
